How to potty train your Italian Greyhound puppy

Potty training an Italian Greyhound puppy is similar to training any other breed of dog.

Although Italian Greyhounds are slightly more difficult to potty train compared to other breeds, but with time, consistency, and positive reinforcement, your pupy will learn where and when to go potty.

Here are some steps you can follow to potty train your Italian Greyhound puppy:

1.Establish a routine: Create a consistent schedule for your puppy's meals, playtime, and potty breaks. Take them to the designated potty area after each meal, nap, and play session.

2a. Choose a designated potty area: Designate a specific spot outside where you want your puppy to go potty. Take them to this spot consistently so they can associate it with the act of elimination. Italian Greyhounds may not be willing to potty outside in cold or rainy/windy weather. Be patient, keep taking your puppy outside and spending some time in the designated area. The more familiar the place becomes, the more likely your puppy will go to potty there.

2b. If you prefer to potty train your puppy to use a pad indoors, in the beginning you should put the pad in the room where puppy can easily can reach it, the room where puppy spends most of the time. As your puppy becomes consistent with using the potty pad, you can gradually begin moving it closer to the designated place. It could be a utility room, bathroom, or a well-ventilated area with easy-to-clean floors.

3. Use positive reinforcement: Whenever your puppy successfully goes potty outside or on the pad, reward them immediately with treats, praises, and lots of encouragement. Positive reinforcement helps to build the desired behavior.

4. Supervise and confine: Keep a close eye on your puppy and confine them to a small area, such as one room or a gated-off section of the house, when you cannot directly supervise them. This will prevent accidents and help you keep track of their potty needs.

5. Watch for signs: Pay attention to your puppy's behavior before they eliminate. Sniffing, circling, and squatting are common signs that they need to go. When you notice these signs, quickly take them to the designated potty area.

6. Clean accidents properly: If accidents happen, clean them up thoroughly using an enzymatic cleaner. This will eliminate any lingering odor that may attract your puppy to the same spot again.

7. Be patient and consistent: Potty training takes time, and accidents are normal. Stay patient, maintain consistency with the training routine, and avoid punishment-based methods, as they may confuse or frighten your puppy.

But since Italian Greyhounds are very owner-oriented, sensitive dogs, a method that works well with them is to show them that you are upset when accidents happen. Over time, your puppy will understand what makes his beloved owner upset and will try not to do so.

Remember, every puppy is different, and it may take some time for your puppy to fully grasp potty training.
