Italian Greyhounds FAQ

Q: What is an Italian Greyhound?

A: An Italian Greyhound is a small and elegant breed of dog that belongs to the Sighthounds family. They are known for their slender build, graceful movement, and affectionate nature. This is one of the most ancient breeds of dogs, their images are found in the tombs of pharaohs and on vases of the 5th century BC. There is also an opinion that this is the very first breed of dog bred as a companion.

Q: How big are Italian Greyhounds?

A: Italian Greyhounds are a small but long-legged breed, typically weighing between 7 and 14 pounds (3-6 kg) and standing around 13 to 15 inches (32-39 cm) tall at the shoulder. IGs of 32 and 39 cm look very different in size, but they are not divided into different standards like Sznaucers. There are no officially recognized subcategories such as "Small Italian Greyhounds" and "Big Italian Greyhounds."

Q: Are Italian Greyhounds hypoallergenic?

A: No dog breed is completely hypoallergenic! However, some breeds may be less likely to cause allergic reactions than others. Italian Greyhounds have short, silky hair and do not shed excessively, which can be beneficial for allergy sufferers. However, they still produce dander, which is a common allergen. If you have allergies, it is recommended to spend time with an Italian Greyhound before deciding to have one as a pet to see how you react.

Q: Are Italian Greyhounds good companion pets?

A: Italian Greyhounds are the most ancient companion breed. They are known for their affectionate and loyal nature, often form strong bonds with their owners, and enjoy being close to them. They can make great companion pets for individuals and families looking for a loving and devoted canine companion.

Q: How long do Italian Greyhounds live?

A: Italian Greyhounds have an average lifespan of 14 to 16 years, although some individuals can live even longer with proper care. It's important to note that various factors such as genetics, diet, exercise, and overall health can influence a dog's lifespan. Providing a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, routine veterinary care, and a stimulating environment can help promote a longer and healthier life for your Italian Greyhound.

Q: Do Italian Greyhounds require a lot of exercise?

A: Italian Greyhounds are sighthounds and have bursts of energy, they are generally more sedate indoors compared to some other breeds. They enjoy short bursts of playtime and exercise but also appreciate relaxing and snuggling with their family members. They do benefit from regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.

Q: How much should I walk with my Italian Greyhound?

A: On average, Italian Greyhounds should be walked at least 60 minutes daily. That should be active walks on a leash or free runs in a secure place. However, it's important to consider situations such as extreme weather or health issues. There is no limit to maximum walks for an adult Italian Greyhound. Just keep attention to your dog's physical condition and age.

Q: Can I use a pad instead of walking my Italian Greyhound?

A: While using indoor pads as an alternative to walking can be convenient in certain situations, it's essential to understand that Italian Greyhounds, like all dogs, still require regular physical exercise and mental stimulation. While indoor pads can serve as a temporary solution for situations such as extreme weather or health issues, they should not replace daily walks entirely.

Q: Do Italian Greyhounds get along with other animals?

A: Yes. They tend to get along well with other dogs, especially when introductions are done gradually. They can live peacefully with cats, but they do have a prey drive, so they may chase small pets like rodents or birds. Many of our graduates live happily with other dogs, cats, and even with rabbits or ferrets. Early socialization and careful introductions to other animals are very important.

Q: Is it easy to train an Italian Greyhound?

A: Italian Greyhounds are very intelligent, but they can also be stubborn or sensitive. The best approach is to use gentle, positive reinforcement methods. They need consistency, patience, and motivation. Don’t try to “dominate” or “force” an Italian Greyhound — at best, it won’t work; at worst, you’ll end up with a sad, withdrawn dog who’s afraid of you. The most effective way is to raise an IG like you would raise a child — gently, gradually, but firmly explaining your rules and expectations.
